    POSITION DESCRIPTION: Librarian/Media Specialist
    (Certified Compensation Guide: $45,380)

    I. General Description:

    The school librarian media specialist plans, directs, implements, and evaluates the library program.

    II. Qualifications:
    1. Minimum of Bachelor’s degree and valid State of Arizona teaching certification as a school library media specialist.
    2. Desire to continue career improvement.
    3. Previous experience as a librarian/media specialist in a high school setting.
    4. Knowledge of operation of all library computer equipment
    5. Excellent communications skills
    6. Excellent organizational skills.
    7. Self-motivated

    III. Duties and Responsibilities:
    1. Establishes behavioral standards for students in the LMC
    2. Assists students in becoming effective and discriminating users of library resources.
    3. Helps students develop habits of independent reference work and skills in the use of
    reference material in relation to planned assignments
    1. Organizes library material, equipment, facilities for effective/efficient utilization/circulation.
    2. Plans, equips and maintains attractive facilities.
    3. Keeps the collection current within the constraints of the annual budget by purchasing
    quality print and non print materials.
    1. Establishes an attractive and easily accessible LMC that is conducive to learning
    2. Maintains the library catalog.
    3. Effectively utilizes clerical, volunteer, student and/or other personnel to provide quality
    library service to users.
    1. Maintains appropriate records of library materials.
    2. Processes materials simply and efficiently.
    3. Through a working knowledge of books and authors in the collection, assists students
    with reading selections.
    1. Is aware of and supports the curriculum through collection development.
    2. Provides leadership in all aspects of the school media program.
    3. Develops a research and library skills program relating to the needs of the students.
    4. Guides students in finding and using a wide variety of materials.
    5. Attempts to instill in students the ability to be self-learners by promoting the spirit of
    Inquiry and teaching effective fact-finding skills.
    1. Plans with teachers, when appropriate, for meaningful and effective grade appropriate
    reference work and/or literature appreciation activities for their students.
    1. Actively plans with teachers and groups of teachers to integrate library services and
    multimedia materials with the instructional program.
    1. Evaluates and selects materials needed to meet both the curricular and individual needs
    of students, teachers, and administrators who will be using the LMC.
    1. Determines the needs of teachers and students as a basis for the selection of new
    materials and equipment.
    1. Does a periodic inventory of library collection as well as library AV equipment and library
    computers.
    III. Duties and Responsibilities (continued):

    20. Supervises the withdrawal of outdated and worn materials.
    21. Demonstrates positive techniques to promote students self-image.
    22. Interacts positively with other staff members.
    1. Provides a positive role model for students (e.g., follows school policies and procedures,
    appropriate, language, courteous, sensitive to individual differences).
    1. Helps staff make full use of the services and resources of the LMC.
    2. Maintains an appearance appropriate for professional assignment.
    3. Allocates and manages expenditures of assigned budget funds on the basis of curricular
    and replacement needs.
