    POSITION DESCRIPTION: Guidance Counselor-ELL

    I. General Description:


    The School Counselor must be dedicated to preparing all students for success in high school and must be able to work with students to instill a sense of purpose and direction for his/her high school career while also instilling in each student (and his/her parents) the belief that he/she is capable of graduating from high school, and capable of benefiting from post-secondary education. The School Counselor provides support to other high school educational programs.

    II. Qualifications:
    1. State of Arizona School Counselor Certificate
    2. Valid IVP Fingerprint Card
    3. Ability to work effectively with student groups and individuals.
    4. Ability to organize ideas and present them with clarity and conciseness.
    5. Knowledge of school curriculum and instructional programs.
    6. Ability to effectively present information and respond appropriately to questions.
    7. Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to the instructional program; skill in oral and written communication.
    8. Bilingual required

    III. Duties and Responsibilities:
    1. Be available for crisis counseling when an individual needs to talk and to be heard.
    2. See each student for whom s/he is responsible at least once, preferably twice, in a one-to-one situation during each school year.
    3. See student in groups when possible. This method can be utilized to disseminate information and to solve common problems.
    4. Assist students in four-year college and career plan.
    5. Have a working knowledge concerning all varieties of post-high school education.
    6. Assist all teachers in gaining an understanding of their students. Through the use of records and conferences, the teacher and counselor should attempt to develop alternative methods of handling a problem or, at least, a better understanding of why a problem exists.
    7. Be an integral and indispensable part of the grade-level team.
    8. Keep accurate records on each student. This requires a close working relationship with the Registrar and Records Supervisor.
    9. Be aware of the number of credits, the required classes completed, as well as the necessary classes to meet career plans and progress toward graduation of each counselee.
    10. Be knowledgeable concerning nationwide testing programs such as ACT and SAT to involve all students that will benefit from these testing programs.
    11. Be responsible for functions that are unique to the grade level currently being served.
    12. Refer students to other appropriate staff members or agencies when it becomes obvious that a student needs further services.
    13. Register all students, including students in the special education program, using available transcripts and data in order to meet graduation requirements and to fulfill their desires for the future.
    14. Stays abreast of modern trends in education through study, observation, school visitations, and attendance at educational workshops and/or conferences.
    15. Maintains appropriate relationships with the parents and patrons of the District; emphasizes positive public relations; assists in the organization of and attends a variety of public functions.
    16. Helps to coordinate and supervise school activities.
    17. Responds to crisis situations when appropriate.
    18. Completes necessary school, district, state and federal reports as assigned.
    19. Maintains a welcoming atmosphere for staff, parents, students, and community.
    20. Maintains confidentiality regarding student, staff, parent and school issues.
    21. Performs responsibilities in an ethical and professional manner.
    22. Performs other duties as assigned.

    IV. Status:

    Supervisor: Principal
    FLSA-Exempt - Certified Contract
    *Annual compensation includes extended days and salary base increase.
