    POSITION DESCRIPTION: Special Education Teacher

    I. General Description:

    The teacher serves as the instruction leader of the students. The teacher displays an interest in the welfare of the students and the school’s educational program; exercises a high degree of imagination, ingenuity and creativity; exhibits professionalism and develops a high degree of self-direction; has excellent communication skills; and displays a sense of humor. The Teacher in this role will create an environment that meets the individual needs and abilities of students that receive special education services; socially, emotionally, physically, and cognitively. The Teacher will provide supports and services to students with disabilities so they may access the general education curriculum, within a full continuum of services.

    II. Qualifications:
    1. The teacher must have a Arizona Special Education Cross Categorical K-12 certificate.
    2. The teacher must have a valid IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card.
    3. The teacher must possess either a Provisional SEI endorsement, a full ESL endorsement, or a full Bilingual endorsement.
    4. The teacher must be highly qualified in the core content for the position to which the individual is assigned.


    III. Duties and Responsibilities:
    1. Creates and designs lesson plans, instruction, and assessment aligned to Arizona Academic Standards.
    2. Uses content material appropriate to students, content area, and academic standards.
    3. Uses resource materials, procedures, and models related to the lesson.
    4. Deals with students in a fair and impartial manner, promoting positive self-image/concept.
    5. Models, requires, and promotes a feeling of mutual respect and courtesy.
    6. Creates an atmosphere conducive to verbal and or nonverbal activity.
    7. Provides constructive feedback/criticism to students.
    8. Follows a logical sequence of instruction.
    9. Plans instruction and activities which address identified objective.
    10. Relates and or integrates materials to other disciplines.
    11. Organize resources to facilitate the achievement of objective.
    12. Provides focus for the students at the beginning of lessons.
    13. Obtains responses, assesses learning, and adjusts instruction in order to provide students the best opportunity for academic success.
    14. Provides opportunities for students to practice concept skills.
    15. Utilizes a variety of techniques and methods to provide instruction at higher levels of thinking.
    16. Communicates expectations for appropriate classroom behavior.
    17. Ensures that students are supervised at all times
    18. Keeps accurate grade and attendance records
    19. Models professionalism through speech, dress, and actions.
    20. Adheres to Arizona Department of Education and District policies, rules, and regulations
    21. Maintains all aspects and provisions of confidentiality related to Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
    22. Provides case management services for students on individual education plans (IEP) including all requirements related to the IEP and compliance of federal, state and district regulations/requirements
    23. Provides direct instruction to students as specified in the individual education plans
    24. Maintains accurate and complete data records as required by the district
    25. Provides coaching and training to staff based on students' individual education plans
    26. Maintains on-going communication (written and verbal) with parents/guardians in a timely manner.
    27. Provides behavior management support and behavior intervention plan implementation to staff for students that receive special education services
    28. Works with staff to implement appropriate accommodations and modifications within the school setting to allow for student success
    29. Performs other duties as assigned.
